Reaching Energy Storage System Milestone—200 Megawatt Hours

How much is 200 megawatt hours of energy storage? Enough to power 6,666 homes.

Reaching Energy Storage System Milestone—200 Megawatt Hours

BAE Systems, a global provider of more than 10,000 electric drive propulsion systems, has achieved a milestone of 200 megawatt hours of capacity for the battery energy storage systems it has delivered to leading transit bus fleets around the world. For more than 20 years, BAE Systems has been designing, manufacturing, and supporting industry-leading battery energy storage systems from its facility in Endicott, New York.

“Reaching this milestone reflects our long-standing commitment to our customers to develop, deliver, and support innovative energy storage solutions,” said Steve Trichka, vice president and general manager for BAE Systems’ Power and Propulsion Solutions business. “We continue to invest in our product lines, manufacturing capabilities, and testing labs while providing clean-energy jobs and careers for our talented Endicott workforce.”

Each year, BAE Systems’ energy storage systems for the transit bus market help transport more than 1.6 billion people to their jobs, school, or activities. These systems are saving 20 million gallons of fuel and preventing more than 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually, which equates to taking 42,000 cars off the road or planting 4 million trees.

BAE Systems is a pioneer in energy storage for the heavy-duty transportation industry. In 1998, the company fielded its first electric-hybrid transit bus featuring lead-acid batteries with New York City’s Metropolitan Transit Authority. In 2007, it was the first to market with a lithium-ion based energy storage system, and last year became the first electric drive propulsion manufacturer in North America to offer two energy storage systems for electric-hybrid transit bus fleets – a higher-capacity 32kWh lithium nickel manganese cobalt (Li-NMC) system and a 1kWh ultracapacitor system.

“As a leading manufacturer of energy storage systems in New York, BAE Systems is leading the charge in demonstrating that New York is a great place to locate and grow clean energy businesses,” said William Acker, executive director, NY-BEST. “We congratulate BAE Systems on this major manufacturing milestone and look forward to working alongside them to build on this success as we continue to expand the energy storage sector in New York.”
