Integrated Compressor Line Testing Facility Expansion

Baker Hughes, through its French subsidiary Thermodyn, completed the technical expansion of its testing and manufacturing facility in Le Creusot to double production capacity for its Integrated Compressor Line (ICL) systems. The expanded site supplies electric-driven, zero-emission compression architectures to traditional gas processing plants and emerging low-carbon energy infrastructure projects.

Industrial Challenge and Manufacturing Scope
Conventional industrial gas compressors rely on mechanical drive trains and pressurized lube oil circuits that generate fugitive emissions, demand frequent maintenance intervals, and require extensive physical plot space. Scaling oil-free, hermetically sealed electric compressor architectures requires specialized balancing, thermal treating, and high-power dynamic verification infrastructure that standard manufacturing plants cannot accommodate. Baker Hughes coordinated with its regional manufacturing unit Thermodyn to integrate advanced machining and dedicated high-voltage test positions into the Le Creusot manufacturing base.

Technical System Architecture
The ICL architecture pairs an electric motor with a centrifugal compressor inside a single pressurized casing, completely eliminating shaft seals and atmospheric venting. Because the assembly runs on active magnetic bearings, the design operates without lube oil, eliminating oil contamination risks and oil supply auxiliaries. The system achieves a physical footprint up to 60 percent smaller than conventional mechanical-drive compressor trains while eliminating operational greenhouse gas emissions at the point of compression.

Facility Upgrades and Integration
To produce and validate these systems at scale, the Le Creusot facility incorporated a new low-speed balancing machine, a heat-treatment furnace, and a dedicated machining center. Testing infrastructure was upgraded with dedicated variable-speed drive systems and modernized test bays capable of simulating customer electrical grids and operating loads. These systems verify the electro-mechanical alignment and thermodynamic performance of each compressor package before site dispatch.

"Demand continues to grow for solutions that improve reliability, performance, efficiency and sustainability," stated Ahmed Eldemerdash, vice president of Climate Technology Solutions at Baker Hughes. "Meeting that demand requires more than just innovative products, but also the ability to design, deliver, assemble and test those solutions at scale."

Operational Impact and Deployment
The doubled production bandwidth accelerates deployment for pipeline transport, offshore platforms, hydrogen blending, and carbon capture installations. By removing auxiliary oil cooling systems and dynamic shaft seals, the tested ICL units minimize scheduled maintenance downtime, improve continuous system availability, and lower installation complexity in space-constrained industrial environments.
