BASF is working alongside automotive systems developers to implement engineering plastics into next-generation brake-by-wire platforms. This collaboration addresses the operational transition from hydraulic actuation to distributed electromechanical braking in software-defined vehicles.

Modern vehicle architectures require strict component redundancy, sensor integration, and weight reduction to support automated driving profiles. To meet these functional safety criteria, the partner engineering teams developed a demonstrator unit comprising an injection-molded pedal assembly, integrated sensor housings, and zone control enclosures.

By replacing legacy metals with specialized polyamides and flame-retardant polyphthalamides, the system ensures dimensional stability, thermal resistance, and dielectric insulation under cyclic mechanical loads.

Circular Logistics and Standardized Data Exchange
Beyond automotive chassis components, the scope of joint development extends to reusable logistics and digital supply chain tracking. In industrial packaging, BASF partnered with BOOXit to manufacture reusable transport containers using high-impact polyamide 6, improving cycle durability compared to single-use transport materials.

To address cross-enterprise traceability, the partners integrated data pathways via the Catena-X automotive network using the PACIFIC software application. This digital infrastructure enables interoperable calculation and exchange of Product Carbon Footprint parameters and automated transmission through Company Certificate Management.

Technical parameters and test demonstrators will be detailed at the Fakuma trade fair, scheduled for 13 to 17 October 2026 in Friedrichshafen, Germany.
