Innovative Modular Hydraulic Units CytroBox Redefine Industrial Power by Bosch Rexroth

The factory in Lüchow produces approximately 8.5 million tapered roller bearings and wheel hub units for commercial vehicles annually. Simultaneously, the plant consistently pursues a sustainable development strategy, utilizing solar energy, biogas, and process heat recovery. The modernization of the central hydraulic system was one of the key projects supporting these initiatives.

The previous hydraulic installation no longer met economic or technical requirements. As Frank Puchowski, Project & Program Manager at SKF, emphasizes, a partial modernization was not cost-effective — it would have required additional costs and re-certification. Consequently, the decision was made to implement a completely new power system.

Modular CytroBox Units and Operational Optimization
The Bosch Rexroth solution includes nine compact, intelligent CytroBox units connected in a master-slave configuration, supported by ABMAXX modules responsible for medium filtration and cooling. This architecture allows performance to be flexibly adjusted to current demand and ensures full transparency of the entire system’s operation.
  • Five units power the hydrostatic drives of the grinding machines.
  • Four units handle the working hydraulics, including lifts, presses, and transport systems.
By using variable-speed screw pumps, the system pressure was reduced from 85 to 78 bar, and for the working hydraulics, down to 45 bar. This resulted in lower energy consumption and a reduction in the number of required hydraulic accumulators.

Efficiency, Savings, and Flexibility
The ABMAXX unit is responsible for filtration, cooling, and automatic system filling, which allowed for a 40% reduction in oil volume (from 20,000 to 12,000 liters). Each working group features a redundant unit (n+1), increasing flexibility and enabling rapid switching and system servicing.

Key benefits include:
  • Energy Savings: CytroBox improves energy efficiency by 3–5%, and when combined with other measures, the plant achieves up to 24% energy savings.
  • Noise Reduction: The system operates more quietly thanks to flow optimization and demand-based operation.
  • Predictive Maintenance: Integrated sensors enable real-time parameter monitoring. Data analysis by Bosch Rexroth allows for fault prediction, increasing system availability to nearly 100%.
Seamless Implementation
The implementation process was fast and efficient — the dismantling of the old installation and the assembly of the new system took only two weeks. The compact design of the modules allowed for transport and installation even in restricted technical spaces without disrupting production.

For SKF, this project proved to be one of the most effective actions in improving energy efficiency. In addition to reducing energy consumption, the plant gained greater operational flexibility and the ability for further optimization through the analysis of operational data. The deployment of CytroBox confirms the growing importance of modular, intelligent solutions in modern industry and marks another step for SKF toward more sustainable and efficient production.
