Providing major advances in high-resolution scanning for faster, highly versatile manufacturing quality control, Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division announced the launch of two major advances in automated large-component quality inspection that make its turnkey PRESTO Quality Stations accessible to manufacturers that need to improve productivity but face budget and skills constraints.
Hexagon’s modular suite of turnkey automated inspection cells is expanding what is possible in the 3D measurement of medium-to-large-sized components in a variety of industrial contexts, including automotive, aerospace and general manufacturing. Two new configurations apply Hexagon’s brand-new HYPERSCAN optical tracking with 3D scanning and the Leica Absolute Tracker ATS800 direct scanning technologies to the PRESTO Quality Station range. These new options complement the existing high-performance Leica Absolute Tracker AT960 with Absolute Scanner AS1 models already deployed in business-critical near-line quality control processes in OEM automotive, rail and aerospace facilities globally.
These advanced solutions are designed to bring a new level of flexibility and accuracy to applications throughout the supply chain for which skills, budget and complexity are barriers to quality process automation. The new PRESTO Quality Station with HYPERSCAN delivers smart, high-resolution scanning with real-time optical tracking at a much lower price point, making automation viable even for organisations with limited budgets. In addition, new ATS800-based PRESTO models offer direct, high-accuracy scanning from a larger standoff, allowing safe, efficient and high-accuracy inspection of fine edges and complex features, ensuring precise assembly processes without the need for robot-mounted scanners.
With robotic inspection workflows deployable in hours rather than days and minimal training required, the highly scalable system offers rapid return on investment. Its modular platform also supports seamless sensor interchangeability and broad metrology software compatibility, including Hexagon’s PC-DMIS, Inspire, SpatialAnalyzer and other popular third-party tools, giving manufacturers the ability to adapt as their manufacturing and inspection needs change.
PRESTO Quality Station with HYPERSCAN
With dual-use capability as a hand-held device for on-the-go shop-floor use as well as fully-automated deployment, the new HYPERSCAN 3D scanner excels in high-productivity and challenging environments. It delivers high-speed 3D scanning at 8.3 million points per second over a large 610 x 640 millimetre scan area, with robust performance supported by and cable-free WiFi connectivity and an optical tracking system that enables absolute positioning at a range of up to 7 metres for a 100 cubic metre measurement volume.
When integrated into Hexagon’s PRESTO Quality Station, HYPERSCAN provides accurate high-speed non-contact quality inspection, eliminating inspection bottlenecks for medium-to-large-volume parts. Powerful robotic automation software built into the solution makes it possible for anyone involved in quality control to quickly build an optimised collision-free program to inspect a given CAD model with no robot programming experience.
Like all PRESTO Quality Stations, it works instantly with most third-party metrology software, providing an out-of-the-box productivity boost for established workflows. With hole-flash technology and advanced edge recognition detailed features are quickly and accurately digitised, while dynamic part tracking allows for precision in vibration-affected environments as well as part-turntable operation, keeping the cell footprint minimal.

PRESTO Quality Station with ATS800
Combining laser tracking with direct scanning functionality, ATS800 enables manufacturers to measure detailed features from up to 40 metres away. Built on proven measurement and positioning technology, it boosts productivity in large-component manufacturing and assembly by quickly and safely measuring critical features with high accuracy, thanks to new TruePoint Interferometer technology.
When integrated into Hexagon’s PRESTO Quality Station with ATS800, the turnkey solution enables manufacturers to measure fine edges, fasteners and other intricate details with high accuracy within a standardised cell environment with no risk of collision. Setup time is reduced because the device’s reflector tracking automatically locks onto a cell-mounted reflector using Hexagon’s patented PowerLock technology. This means the system can find an absolute position reference automatically when parts are loaded, speeding up alignment when using a turntable for part reorientation.
Unlike a 3D scanner system, the PRESTO Quality Station with ATS800 requires no robotic arms to automate measurement, providing high speed, highly flexible automated quality inspection at a much lower cost and with minimal programming.
Nicolas Lachaud-Bandres, VP Industry Solutions at Hexagon, commented: “The seamless integration of our HYPERSCAN and ATS800 sensors into our PRESTO Quality Stations gives our customers the flexibility to choose the best cost-value solution for each application. The unified software platform means anyone can learn and become productive quickly, transforming manufacturing organisations’ ability to implement automated scanning in tough, highly dynamic shop-floor environments across all their operations.
“Our new automated quality systems bring high-resolution scanning within reach of many more companies, helping to boost inspection productivity, reduce bottlenecks and enable faster response to quality deviations globally. The unrivalled flexibility and scalability we can now deliver by applying the latest metrology innovations gives organisations the ability to measure often and learn at speed.”
