HUTCHINSON OBTAINS ISO 50001 CERTIFICATION FOR ITS MANUFACTURING PLANTS IN CAMPO MAIOR (PORTUGAL) AND GOZO (MALTA)

The Hutchinson production plants in Campo Maior, Portugal, and Gozo, Malta, obtained ISO 50001 certification for their energy management system in December 2023.

After Mannheim in 2013 and Château-Gontier in 2015, 100% of the O-Rings & Bonded Seals plants in Europe are now ISO 50001 certified. This certification is part of the Hutchinson group's strategic plan, which aims to achieve 100% of ISO 50001 certified plants by 2025 and carbon neutrality by 2050.

As a sealing specialist, Hutchinson is committed to reducing emissions and achieving carbon neutrality by pursuing ISO 50001 certification for its plants. The Campo Maior plant is specialised in the production of O-Rings, while the Gozo plant manufactures Bonded Seals, mainly for the automotive, aerospace and defence industries. The ISO 50001 standard validates the energy management system and the continuous improvement approach to energy performance. To meet the requirements of this standard, local teams have carried out metering plans for a year, presented an energy balance of their consumption, and implemented action plans to optimise energy efficiency. Michel-André Courcol, Executive Vice-President O-Rings & Bonded Seals, emphasises that "This certification is essential to help reduce the carbon footprint of the Hutchinson group's plants".

Measures to reduce energy consumption
Daily work is carried out with production operators, in particular by automating certain switch-ons and optimising press heating. Medium- and long-term projects also include solarising plants by installing solar panels, switching to LED lighting, recovering heat from compressors and installing counters on production machines. These counters are controlled by MES (Manufacturing Execution System) to monitor machine consumption in real time and reduce energy costs (gas and electricity).

A collective initiative
ISO 50001 certification is part of a wider environmental initiative aimed at limiting energy consumption at all levels of the company. This also involves raising employee awareness of their day-to-day behaviour, reminding them of eco-responsible behaviour and eliminating waste.
