JAI Sweep+: Prism-based colour line scan cameras ensure fast inspection of moving objects

JAI’s Sweep+ prism-based colour line scan cameras combine high colour fidelity with best in class resolution along with high-speed data transmission over long distances for a wide range of applications.

The prism-based sensor configuration provides same optical path for RGB imaging removing imaging artifacts introduced when the inspection objects have random or highly variable movement. With the ability to detect small details over a wide scan width at high speed (36,000 lines/s at the full 8k resolution) the optical filters used on the prism also deliver the most accurate colour reproduction with minimum colour channel cross talk. This combination makes the cameras ideally suited for applications in food, recycling, pharmaceutical, steel, textiles, paper, foil, electronics and transport industries.

Examples include

  • Belt/bulk sorting and inspection of fruits, vegetables, or other small 3- dimensional objects.
  • Free-fall inspection of grains, nuts, or other similar items.
  • Recycling applications using belts to sort various loose items such as coloured plastic, glass and granulates.
  • Textile, steel, paper, or foil inspection where vibrations or undulations in the web are common.

Such applications often involve problems in image acquisition requiring subsequent correction of image data via software. Typical movement challenges include vibrations or undulations in web-based rolls, sudden changes in web speeds, random rotation of free-falling objects, and objects rolling or wobbling on conveyor belts.

Either three or four individual 8k CMOS line scan sensors, depending on model, are aligned in the same optical plane using a prism to simultaneously capture red, green, blue and NIR light simultaneously, delivering improved light transmission and sharp colour wavelength separation even with randomly moving objects. The specific optical arrangement achieved from the prism optics removes the need for subsequent software correction of image data, saving the costs associated with complex software development.

The NIR version enables a simultaneous inspection of surface properties or printing, as well as defects that are only visible in the near infrared. As an example, sub surface defects such as bruising in fruit can be easily identified by different greyscale values in the IR channel.

Recycling Applications

The cameras support Precision Time Protocol (PTP) ensuring synchronised image capture in multi camera applications when linked to other PTP-supported cameras. They can be easily integrated into factory settings via the 10 GigE interface with either copper or fibre configurations, providing high-speed, GenICam-compliant GigE Vision output.

As a perfect add-on for prism-based cameras and NIR sensors, STEMMER IMAGING also offer colour corrected lenses, ideally suited for use in colour vision applications where accuracy and colour fidelity is important. In addition, fully configured and tested camera solutions optimized for use in specific applications can be tailored to individual customer needs.
