3D laser scanner advances inline metrology in production

With the scanCONTROL 8500 series, Micro-Epsilon introduces a new generation of compact 3D laser scanners designed for precise inline measurement tasks in industrial production environments. The sensors combine high resolution, integrated data processing, and a compact design to address the requirements of modern automation and quality control.

Integrated 3D data processing within the sensor
A key feature of the series is integrated 3D data processing directly within the sensor. In addition to conventional 2D profile evaluation, measurement values derived from 3D datasets can be calculated internally and transmitted to control systems via Industrial Ethernet.

Alternatively, calibrated 3D point clouds or 2D profile data can be provided for external processing. This architecture reduces data load and enables application-specific delivery of relevant measurement information.

Compact design for flexible integration
The sensors are designed for use in confined installation spaces and feature a significantly reduced footprint compared to similar systems. This simplifies integration into machines, production lines, and retrofit applications.

The compact design reduces engineering effort and provides greater flexibility in machine layout.

High-resolution data acquisition
The scanCONTROL 8500 series uses a 4K sensor matrix with up to 4,224 measurement points per profile. Combined with a profile rate of up to 10 kHz and a data rate of up to 25 million points per second, this enables high-density and precise surface capture.

The optical system is optimized to fully utilize the available resolution, ensuring reproducible measurement results even for complex geometries.

Stable measurement on challenging surfaces
The sensors employ green laser technology, combining the advantages of red and blue lasers. This enables shorter exposure times, reduced noise, and lower sensitivity to ambient light. These characteristics support stable measurement results across a wide range of materials and surface conditions, expanding applicability in diverse industrial environments.

Application areas in industrial manufacturing
The series is designed for applications in mechanical engineering, automation technology, battery manufacturing, robotics, electronics production, and medical technology. Typical use cases include inline quality inspection, geometry verification, and process monitoring.

Variants and positioning
The portfolio includes the high-performance scanCONTROL 8500 as well as the scanCONTROL 8200, which is optimized for cost-performance balance. Both variants are available with measurement ranges of 25, 50, and 100 mm.

By combining compact design, integrated processing, and high measurement resolution, the scanCONTROL 8500 series addresses the need for precise, flexible, and scalable 3D metrology in modern production processes.
