Interstuhl Selects Dürr for Advanced Chair Coating Solutions

Interstuhl Büromöbel GmbH & Co. KG, a long-established German manufacturer of office and specialty work chairs, has implemented Dürr’s automated coating technology to enhance the production quality and consistency of seat surfaces used in industrial, laboratory, cleanroom and electrostatic discharge (ESD) environments. The adoption of this system addresses technical challenges associated with coating complex foam interiors and meeting stringent performance criteria for conductivity and durability in professional applications.

Integrated System for Efficient Multi-Color 2K Coating
The solution installed at Interstuhl’s Meßstetten-Tieringen facility consists of a robot-mounted EcoGun AS AUTO pro spray gun integrated with a modular EcoSupply2 Core paint supply setup and a 2K process controlled by an EcoAUC unit. This configuration automates the application of coating onto the inner surfaces of segmented foam molds immediately after liquid polyurethane foam is poured, enabling the material to absorb the coating uniformly and assume color as part of the molding process. The system is capable of handling up to five distinct colors, although three are currently in use.

Compared with more manual or less integrated coating approaches, the combination of robot-assisted spray application and controlled 2K dosing enhances repeatability and reduces variability in surface quality. The compact EcoSupply2 Core stations are designed for confined industrial spaces and are paired with robust EcoPump9 series pumps, valves and paint change blocks that maintain reliable flow and color switching even with challenging coating materials that harden quickly and resist flushing.

Material Handling and Clean Processing for Sensitive Environments
The coatings used in Interstuhl’s application serve dual functions: aesthetic coloration and electrical conductivity, crucial for chairs deployed in cleanroom and ESD-sensitive settings where static buildup must be minimized. This multifunctional requirement differentiates the system from conventional paint processes targeted solely at surface aesthetics.

Extensive pre-installation testing at Dürr’s Test Center in Ledeč nad Sázavou demonstrated that the valve architecture has minimal dead space, preventing material stagnation and reducing the risk of contamination or clogging. This characteristic supports consistent, clean processing over extended production runs and addresses a common pain point in high-performance coating systems where dead zones can impair quality and uptime.

Addressing Competitive Challenges in Precision Coating
In the context of automated coating technologies for industrial furniture production, Dürr’s solution distinguishes itself by integrating precise robotic application with flexible multi-color capability and reliable material handling tailored to complex, hard-to-flush coatings. Whereas simpler or manual methods often struggle with consistency and high operational demands, this system delivers robust control over 2K processes and accommodates space limitations typical in modern manufacturing floors.
