The project covers fabrication and installation of a new steel structure to restore clearance, rail capacity and multimodal traffic on a critical European waterway.

Eiffage, through its German subsidiary SEH Engineering, has secured the contract to construct the new Levensau Bridge over the Kiel Canal in northern Germany. The project will be delivered in consortium with BEMO Tunnelling and Metrostav DIZ, with a total contract value of €183 million, including an €82 million share for Eiffage.
The existing Levensau Bridge is the oldest structure still spanning the Kiel Canal, the world’s busiest artificial waterway and a vital corridor for regional logistics and European transport. Due to its age and insufficient clearance for larger vessels, full replacement of the bridge was required.
The new structure will measure 241 metres in length and 42 metres in height, with a total weight of approximately 10,000 tonnes. Its steel superstructure will feature prominent arches. Fabrication will take place at SEH’s facilities in Hanover, Germany, and at Metrostav DIZ’s plants in Prague, Czech Republic, while BEMO Tunnelling will carry out the civil engineering works.
The bridge is scheduled to open to rail traffic in autumn 2027, with road traffic, cyclists and pedestrians following a few months later.
