Rail modernisation has delivered remarkable benefits, from faster journeys to improved passenger experiences. Yet these advances have also introduced new safety and security challenges. Designers and manufacturers must now address these evolving risks while maintaining performance and efficiency.
“As rail systems evolve, our focus remains on helping manufacturers design safer, more reliable, and more comfortable travel experiences,” said David Kelly, Applications Engineer at Southco. “Even the smallest components can have a significant impact on safety and performance in modern rail environments.”
Safety at Speed
High-speed rail allows passengers to reach destinations faster than ever, but the higher velocities also increase the importance of secure components. At speeds exceeding 300 km/h, loose panels or access covers can cause serious hazards.
Southco’s E3 VISE ACTION® compression latches address this by providing clear visual indicators when not properly secured. These “Make Safety Visible by Southco™” products include designs with reflective wings that deploy when the latch is open, and bi-stable covers that remain open until fully latched — enabling quick, visible verification by maintenance staff, day or night.
To enhance clarity, red — the universal colour for danger — is used as standard, though customers can specify alternatives like yellow or orange for better camera visibility.
Passenger Comfort and Experience
Passenger comfort is shaped by subtle yet vital touchpoints such as tables, armrests, and hooks. Low-cost or poorly designed components can affect both safety and the perception of quality.
Southco’s AH-Bifold Constant Torque Hinge Series uses friction technology to hold tables securely at any angle, preventing accidental drops. Its flush-mount design allows space-saving stowage when not in use. For aesthetic durability, Southco’s ST Series hinges offer a compact, all-metal design with long-lasting high-torque performance — eliminating the need for additional supports.
The MP Point Latch features a retractable metal pull knob that pops up with a push, delivering both function and a solid, premium feel — an important detail that contributes to the overall passenger experience.
Balancing Efficiency and Security
The integration of IoT and smart systems in rail has improved efficiency but also increased exposure to cyber and physical security threats. In addition, modern trains’ on-board electrical systems require secure enclosures to minimise fire risks.
Southco’s rotary latch systems provide robust, hidden latching for electrical and service panels, combining push-to-close convenience with multi-point security. Many of these latches meet DIN EN45545-3 fire protection standards, achieving resistance ratings from E30 to E60 — ensuring secure panel integrity even during fire events.
To enhance access control, Southco’s Connected Access solutions merge mechanical locks with electronic actuation, enabling remote-controlled access via RFID, PIN code, or Bluetooth®. Custom key designs further prevent unauthorised access, addressing the challenges of modern rail maintenance and data security.

Sustainability Through Design
Rail modernisation also demands sustainable and inclusive design. Southco works with seat and carriage manufacturers to develop accessibility solutions that allow adaptable interior layouts for passengers with wheelchairs, bikes, or large luggage.
Using rotary latching systems and friction hinges, staff can safely reconfigure seating or storage areas without risk of sudden drops or unsecured components. These durable mechanisms reduce replacements and downtime, supporting long-term cost efficiency and sustainability.
Southco also champions eco-conscious manufacturing — reusing leftover plastic through its regrind process and integrating recycled materials wherever possible.
Simplify, Secure, Sustain
With decades of experience and a portfolio of proven access solutions, Southco has already done the engineering groundwork — from testing and compliance to ergonomic design. Its products simplify installation, enhance safety, and support more sustainable, reliable train systems.
As rail technology continues to evolve, Southco’s innovations demonstrate how even the smallest components can make the biggest difference.
