Custom Motor Design For Snow Generator Equipment Manufacturing

TechnoAlpin is a company specializing in the production of technical snowmaking systems. The company required a new motor for its snow cannons, with technical specifications not available in the standard catalogs of industrial suppliers. The application imposes rigorous engineering and operational constraints: the machinery operates in high mountain conditions, exposed to freezing temperatures, high humidity, and intensive duty cycles concentrated in a narrow time window of approximately thirty days per year. In this extreme operational context, technical malfunctions must be avoided to ensure service continuity on the slopes.

Development of a dedicated electromechanical solution
To meet these requirements, the company relied on the ABB Motion OEM Hub, a facility designed to support machine builders through the co-design of custom solutions. The technical collaboration led to the development of a customized motor, available in two distinct sizes, characterized by construction choices specifically designed to tolerate the environmental stresses typical of snowmaking machines. The system offers superior efficiency compared to the previously used technical solution, optimizing the operation of the machines at high altitudes. The manufacturer selected this architecture not only for the component's performance but also to ensure a stable supply chain capable of supporting real-time engineering modifications.

Operational results and supply scalability
The implementation included an initial field validation phase using an operational pre-series in real conditions, a necessary step to certify the thermal and mechanical resistance of the design. Following the successful completion of the tests, the supply experienced rapid scalability, growing from about fifty units integrated in the first season to almost seven hundred pieces in the second. The adoption of the new motor has increased the overall efficiency of the snow generators, allowing TechnoAlpin to stabilize production operations, reduce the risks of unplanned downtime, and plan further engineering integrations in the field of drives and traction.
